Not far from Beit Shemesh in central Israel lies the archaeological complex of Beit Guvrin, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This unique location is a real treasure for young history enthusiasts, where you can walk in the footsteps of ancient Romans, Crusaders, and Mamluks.

One of the highlights is the ancient Roman amphitheater, where gladiator battles once took place. Today, visitors can sit on the stone steps of the arena and imagine the atmosphere of the past, when thousands of spectators gathered here. For a deeper experience, you can even listen to a short audio play about gladiators by scanning the QR code on the information board.

Beit Guvrin is truly an open-air museum, where the legacies of multiple civilizations intertwine. It’s an ideal destination for a family outing with an educational twist, allowing children not only to learn history but also to feel its living energy.

Walking through the cool, shaded stone passageways, you’ll discover the Bestiary, where wild animals such as lions, elephants, and hippos were once kept for gladiator fights. The ancient columns of the arena now make a perfect backdrop for photos, as if your children were standing on the very spot where ancient warriors once received their honors.

Equally impressive are the ruins of a medieval Crusader fortress and church, which were later rebuilt and repurposed by the Mamluks. The ruins are located just a 7-minute walk from the amphitheater.

Climbing up the narrow stairways, you will reach the amphitheater and enjoy the view of the green surroundings.

Beit Guvrin offers a unique experience for those who want to learn more about the past of this land and its many cultural layers.

On Saturdays, there is no ticket controller on site, and the gate remains open for everyone free of charge. Nearby, you will find a gas station with a small shop, a café, and restrooms.

Plan a family weekend at the amphitheater of Beit Guvrin and discover its archaeological wonders.
