Zikhron Ya'akov

Zikhron Ya’akov is one of the oldest towns in Israel, nestled on the picturesque slopes of Mount Carmel, just 35 km south of Haifa. The town was founded in 1882 by Jewish settlers from Romania and supported by Baron Edmond de Rothschild, who played a key role in its development. Today, Zikhron Ya’akov combines history, culture, nature, and winemaking traditions, making it a must-visit destination in northern Israel.

Strolling Along HaMeyasdim Street

A walk down the central HaMeyasdim Street (Founders’ Street) feels like traveling back in time:

  • Restored stone houses from the late 19th century, now home to boutiques, cafes, restaurants, and art galleries.

  • Museums and cultural centers that tell the story of the first settlers and the early days of the town.

  • A charming atmosphere that invites leisurely walks, shopping for handmade crafts, and tasting Israeli cuisine in cozy cafes.

One highlight is the Ohel Yaakov Synagogue, built in 1886 with Rothschild’s support — a living monument to the town’s heritage.

Practical Information

  • Location: Zikhron Ya’akov is about a 45-minute drive from Tel Aviv and 30 minutes from Haifa.

  • Best time to visit: Spring (April–May) and autumn (October–November), ideal for walking and wine tasting outdoors.

  • Tip: Book winery tours and visits to the local park in advance for the best experience.

Zikhron Ya’akov is not just a town — it’s a unique blend of history, landscapes, and wine culture, offering an authentic Israeli experience.

Just a few minutes from the center of Zikhron Ya’akov lies Ramat HaNadiv, the memorial park dedicated to Baron Edmond de Rothschild.

Known in Hebrew as “The Benefactor’s Heights”, Ramat HaNadiv was established to honor the baron who played a vital role in supporting Jewish settlement in Eretz Israel at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries.

Today, Ramat HaNadiv is more than a park — it is a unique combination of a botanical garden, memorial site, and nature reserve, offering tranquility, beauty, and history.

Highlights of Ramat HaNadiv

  • The Rothschild Crypt: At the heart of the gardens lies the tomb of Baron Edmond de Rothschild and his wife Adelheid, transferred here from France in 1954. Surrounded by cypress trees and manicured alleys, the site radiates peace and dignity.

  • Scenic Viewpoint: Next to the memorial, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Carmel Hills.

  • Themed Gardens:

    • Rose Garden – one of the largest in Israel, especially beautiful in spring.

    • French Garden – designed in classical European style, symbolizing the baron’s roots in France.

    • Fragrant Herb Garden – with lavender, rosemary, and Mediterranean plants.

    • Shaded Grove – perfect for rest under ancient trees.

Beyond the landscaped gardens stretches a nature reserve, home to local flora and fauna. Walking trails vary from short family-friendly paths to longer hiking routes. Along the way, you may spot birds, lizards, and small mammals while enjoying the natural beauty of Mount Carmel.
